Discover Restaurant Schliessi

Tucked away at Additional Wildschutzweg 30, 4058 Basel, Switzerland, Restaurant Schliessi feels like one of those places you almost want to keep to yourself. I first visited on a chilly autumn evening after a long walk along the Rhine, and from the moment I stepped inside, the warm lighting and rustic wooden interiors made it clear that this wasn’t just another dining spot in Basel. It’s the kind of restaurant where locals linger over dinner, families celebrate milestones, and travelers stumble in by chance and leave impressed.

The menu is rooted in Swiss and regional European cuisine, with a clear focus on seasonal ingredients. Basel is known for its culinary blend of Swiss, French, and German influences, and you can taste that balance here. I ordered a classic Zürcher Geschnetzeltes on my first visit-tender veal in a creamy white wine sauce served with crispy Rösti. The meat was perfectly cooked, and the sauce had depth without being overpowering. According to the Swiss Federal Statistical Office, dining out remains one of the most popular leisure activities in Switzerland, and restaurants that emphasize local sourcing and traditional preparation tend to receive consistently higher customer satisfaction ratings. Schliessi clearly understands that formula.

What stands out most is the attention to process. During a conversation with one of the staff members, I learned that the kitchen prioritizes fresh, locally sourced produce whenever possible. In fact, many Swiss chefs follow recommendations from organizations like GastroSuisse, which emphasize quality control, traceability of ingredients, and hygiene standards. You can see this commitment reflected in the presentation of each dish. Salads arrive crisp and vibrant, meats are plated with care, and desserts-especially their house-made chocolate mousse-strike that perfect balance between indulgent and refined.

The atmosphere deserves just as much praise as the food. The dining room has a cozy, chalet-style charm, yet it doesn’t feel outdated. On weekends, the place buzzes with conversation, but the layout ensures you can still enjoy your meal without feeling cramped. I’ve noticed in several reviews online that guests consistently mention the friendly service. From my own experience, the staff is attentive without hovering. On one occasion, when I wasn’t sure which local wine to try, the server patiently explained the differences between regional Swiss varietals, including a crisp white from the Basel-Landschaft area. That kind of knowledge builds trust and shows genuine expertise.

Restaurant Schliessi also adapts well to different occasions. I’ve seen business dinners unfold smoothly in one corner while a birthday celebration filled another with laughter. The flexibility of the menu helps; you’ll find hearty meat dishes, lighter vegetarian options, and seasonal specials that change throughout the year. This rotation keeps the experience fresh and aligns with the broader European farm-to-table movement, which the European Commission has actively promoted through sustainability initiatives.

Of course, no place is perfect. Parking near Additional Wildschutzweg 30 can sometimes be limited during peak hours, and reservations are highly recommended, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings. Still, that’s often a sign that a restaurant is doing something right. Consistent positive reviews, repeat local customers, and a steady reputation in Basel’s dining scene speak volumes.

For anyone exploring Basel’s food culture, this location offers more than just a meal. It provides a snapshot of regional flavors, careful culinary methods, and genuine Swiss hospitality. Whether you’re scanning restaurant reviews for a reliable dinner spot or simply wandering through the city looking for a memorable menu, this address in 4058 Basel delivers an experience that feels both authentic and thoughtfully executed.

  • Amazing experience, a restaurant in the woods, by the flowing river, in a clear starry night with all the warming fires outside. You need to sit outside even if it's a bit chilly, you need to taste the Metzgete choice of sausages, you need to try their amazing Ueli Swiss beer and you need to be handled by the very friendly and lovely staff as the king of the night. I repeat that this restaurant offers an amazing customer experience and that not only because of the food. One tip. You cannot drive over there with the car as it is truly in the woods and not allowed. Need either a bike ride or a 15 min walk from the nearest parking place in Eglise

  • A great evening out with family and friends. Sad to hear that the head chef was ill. I hope he is well soon. Despite this the service was good and friendly and the food was delicious.

  • Very nice spot for a beer on a warm afternoon walking back into central Basel after a visit to the Fondation Beyeler art gallery. Friendly and helpful staff. Located within the lovely Landschaftspark Wiese.

  • i love this place. so unpretentious but with great service, reasonable prices & good food & drinks. i can definitely recommend their cheese sandwich, so simple but so good! the bread is wonderful. their veggie pie is also delicious, served with a small green salad. on top of that the location is very cosy.

  • Deserves 5 stars - very friendly staff accommodating all our wishes. We were able to preorder 10 trouts for a birthday dinner, we had drinks on the terrace and dinner inside as it started to rain. 20min stroll to and from the restaurant.
